TEDx is a ride this time around, ever heard of TEDx Adventures?

Since April 2016 I've been on the committee for TEDxShanghaiWomen and TEDxPuxi.

My first year with TEDx, I was on the operations team, specifically managing the thirty or so volunteers that we would need the day of the big 1,000 person live event.

Our TEDx committee was about 20 badass women from all different backgrounds and careers.

I am one of the youngest on the committee so wanted to prove my worth

I started out on one of six teams within the committee. Last year was good, but not much of a challenge professionally but it still enlightening to be on a committee with older and much more established professional women.

My second and current year with TEDx has been much more of a time commitment and has led to much more professional and personal development. I've been tasked with doing something I have less experience and confidence in; Public speaking as well as developing TED-style mini events centered around a topic of my choosing.

I am head of the newest team within the committee which is a huge honor. I am so grateful to our Chair Nancy Pon for seeing me as a leader within the larger committee and able to develop our newest team within the committee. As Head of the Engagement Team my responsibility is to create a community for TEDxPuxi. Generally, we just have the main event once a year and we work for months to do that but now with this new role, I will be engaging the community year round by holding smaller, more intimate events called adventures.

After our initial meeting back in March, I started brainstorming what would a good launch event for this new community that would build excitement in TEDx style fashion?

I decided on the topic "Why do we need women-led communities?" How appropriate right?

After all, I've been managing GGI Asia for years, and was now involved in another committee also led by a strong and empowered expat woman in Shanghai.

So, I gathered all of the women's community leaders I knew and organized a very intimate dinner and discussion for July 1st 2017.

Thanks to my Engagement team because honestly without them, there is NO WAY I would've been able to pull off this adventure. Thank you Gabby, Karen, and Miriam, honestly, you girls are amazing. Also, thanks to Camden and egg for hosting us.

Feel free to shoot me a message if you are interested in organizing TEDx events in your local community.

Have a read of the press release article here or below that I wrote about our first TEDxPuxi Adventure.

Welcome to TEDxPuxi Adventures!

On Saturday July 1st TEDxPuxi held its first official adventure, an intimate event for the millennial women community leaders of Puxi, the historic center of Shanghai.

TEDxPuxi Adventures are small TED-like events that are meant to engage, inspire and connect the community in addition to the larger annual event that is happening on November 3rd this year. For the first adventure, the important and relevant topic of “How do women-oriented social movements begin?” was explored and discussed over the duration of the night.

As the attendees entered the venue, the community leaders were asked to define and write on small post-it notes what they believed makes a good community leader before then placing them on the “leadership wall.”  The results were categorized into social, emotional and practical qualities. This quickly turned into a discussion amongst the women and a recurring theme of being direct (emotional), energetic (social), and organized (practical) were the main takeaways from the conversations.

The evening continued with Michelle Ibarra, the host for the evening and also the Head of Engagement at TEDxPuxi, introducing how TEDxPuxi came to fruition as the newest TEDx in Shanghai. TEDxPuxi spun off from the same team, which built the successful TEDxShanghaiWomen that has been running for five years. The team continues to devote their time and service to the positive transformation of their community.

Next to speak was well-known millennial poet and entrepreneur, Gabby Gabriel. Gabby broke down how and why women should create communities in ten concrete steps.

1.)    Stay true to your idea.

2.)    A small movement is still a movement.

3.)    Strengthen community connections.

4.)    Passionate obsession is healthy.

5.)    You are who you say you are.

6.)    Let go of your ego and be vulnerable.

7.)    Think big, but plan detailed.

8.)    Be patient.

9.)    Community is family.

10.)Believe 相信

Gabby concluded her talk with number ten, “Believe” which resonated with the leaders in the room and perfectly paralleled this year’s TEDxPuxi theme, YES…and? The theme is about the ability to approach new innovative and unplanned ideas by saying YES…therefore producing new solutions and sparking dialogue that could very much change the future with its endless possibilities.

The night continued with the community leaders saying YES, believing and using this power to take it one step further and collaborating. The last step for the evening was to look once again at the leadership wall, and choose three points that they must say YES to changing and developing.

The community leaders left feeling inspired, intrigued, and not only thinking about how their communities began but WHY and how to say YES to the next step in their lives of dedication and leadership.

Special thanks to the community leaders who supported and attended the first TEDxPuxi Adventure.
